# Firecrawl Known Pitfalls
## Overview
Real gotchas from production Firecrawl integrations. Each pitfall includes the bad pattern, why it fails, and the correct approach. Use this as a code review checklist.
## Prerequisites
- A code-review owner and approved target, budget, retention, and credential policies.
- Access to redacted configuration and aggregate telemetry, not live API keys or captured page content.
## Instructions
1. Review every crawl for an allowlisted target, explicit limit, bounded retry, and idempotent downstream behavior.
2. Verify data storage, retention, and consumer access before accepting a new output format or extraction path.
3. Test proposed corrections with synthetic targets and compare aggregate outcomes before production promotion.
4. Document exceptions with an owner and expiry; revoke unsafe access or disable unbounded jobs immediately.
## Output
Create a review receipt with findings, policy references, remediation owner, validation result, exception expiry, and follow-up date. Do not include credentials or captured content.
## Error Handling
- Stop a release when a target is not allowlisted, a limit is absent, or a destination cannot enforce access controls.
- Quarantine unexpected schemas or budget spikes for review instead of expanding retries.
- Escalate suspected credential or content exposure with redacted evidence and follow the incident process.
## Examples
Review a synthetic crawl configuration with no page limit. Reject it, add a bounded limit and allowlist, then verify the canary produces only aggregate metrics and can be disabled without replaying captured pages.
## Pitfall 1: Unbounded Crawl (Credit Bomb)

## Pitfall 2: Not Specifying Output Format

## Pitfall 3: Not Waiting for JS-Heavy Pages

## Pitfall 4: Wrong Package Name / Import

## Pitfall 5: Polling Too Aggressively

## Pitfall 6: No Error Handling on Scrape

## Pitfall 7: Ignoring includePaths Start URL Match

## Pitfall 8: Requesting Screenshots Unnecessarily

## Pitfall 9: Not Using Batch for Multiple URLs

## Pitfall 10: Not Validating Extracted Content

## Code Review Checklist
- [ ] All `crawlUrl` calls have `limit` set
- [ ] `formats` explicitly specified (never rely on defaults)
- [ ] `waitFor` or `actions` used for SPAs
- [ ] Import is `@mendable/firecrawl-js`
- [ ] Async crawl polls with backoff, not tight loop
- [ ] Scrape result checked for success and content length
- [ ] Batch scrape used for multiple known URLs
- [ ] Extract results validated before persistence
- [ ] Error handling for 429, 402, and empty content
